in Mary River
Joyce Margaret Lesina, aged 12 years, the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Agnes Lesina, an employee of the Railway Hotel, Gympie, was drowned in the Mary River a short distance above Bell's Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Shortly after she disappeared her body was recovered from about 15ft of water but artificial respiration proved unavailing.
The girl went to Bell's Bridge on a motor truck in company with Desmond W. P. Beausang of the Railway Hotel, Alan Thomas Goldworthy, of Lawrence-street, William Raymond Mackie, of Red Hill and Joan Adel Pearce of Lawence-street, the intention of the male members of the party being to get a load of gravel from the pit a few hundred vards above the bridge. The girl played by the water's edge with an Alsatian dog while the truck was being loaded. When this was done. Beausang and Mackie went into the river for a swim, the girl Lesina donning Miss Pearce's togs and also entering the water. The two youths
swam out about six yards to a log and later swam down stream. The girl had apparently swam out to the same log and, when Mackie turned to swim upstream again he heard her call for help and saw that she had a grip on the log. Both Beausan and Mackie went to the girl's assistance but she struggled so violently that they had to release their hold on her and swim for the bank of the stream, which was running
fairly strongly. The girl disappeared soon after she broke away from her friends. (Gympie Times)
