A sad drowning fatality occurred in the Barwon River, near Prince Alfred Bridge, on 28th January. Several boys including a lad named Norman Manly, aged 15 years, entered the stream for a bathe in the vicinity of the college boat sheds. After the boys had dressed, Manly, who was able to swim only a few strokes, stripped and re-entered the river. After a while his companions missed him, and one of them, Thomas
Casey, dived and recovered the body. Manly breathed after bring bought to the bank, and Mrs. D. Brownlee, a trained nurse, who lives in the neighborhood, endeavored to restore animation until the arrival of Dr Grimwade, who continued the work without avail. The body was removed to the resience of Mr Peterson, Clark street, Chilwell, with whom the boy lived.
The mother of the deceased is a widow, living at Hepburn, near Daylesford, where she was one of the victims of the recent disastrous fire. She escaped with what she stood up in, and her daughter, Mrs M'Guiness, was also burnt out. (Lachlander)
On Sunday afternoon Norman Manley aged 15, was bathing in the Barwon River at Geelong with somne companions at a spot known as "The Bottomless Pit," when be was drowned. (Portland Guardian)
ANOTHER DEATH AT DAYLESFORD
DAYLESFORD, Tuesday.
Mrs. Geix, the aged lady who had to be carried from a burning house last Tuesday at Korweinguboora, and left on the road for a considerable time, died last night.
