GEORGE IVIL A link with the early days of business in Auckland was severed by the death on Saturday, at the age of 90, of Mr. George Ivil, who estabiished the first hairdressing saloon and tobacconist’s shop in Auckland. He was in active business in the city for 33 years, retiring 35 years ago. Mr. Ivil’s name has been associated with the business life of the city tor nearly 70 years. Born in Pendlebury, Manchester, in 1843. lie learned the art of the hairdresser in his early boyhood. and when 21 years of age he left for New Zealand in the ship Ardberg, arriving at Auckland on December 17, 1864, after a voyage of 120 days. Prior to Mr. Ivil’s arrival, the business of hairdresser and tobacconist had been carried on separately in the town, but the young man saw the advantage of combining the two and opened a shop in Wyndham street. BEARDS AND WHISKERS It was the first establishment in Auckland to be distinguished by the now familiar striped barber’s pole. The male sartorial fashion in 1865, when the shop was opened, had its most striking expression in prolific beards and whiskers, and shaving was not nearly as popular as it is to-day. Mr Ivil was the most skilful Auckland hairdresser of his day, and few barbers since have surpassed the speed and deftness with which he used the scissors. Haircutting by machine was unknown; and close trimming on the lace and at the back of the neck was done with the points of the scissors. It was a strict rule in Mr. Ivil's establishment that the razor should never be employed for this purpose. Remarkable speed and efficiency were acquired in the use of the scissors for this delicate work an accomplishment almost entirely unknown to the present-day hairdresser. The tobacco habit in Mr. Ivil was confined to pipe-smoking. Cigarettes were entirely unknown, and so was the use of cut tobacco. Plug tobacco, which was the universal smoke was imported by a Dunedin firm and retailed throughout the colony. It was the practice to cut it at the counter with a knife, small chopper or a hand-machine. CIGARETTES IN 1887 Cigarettes did not, appear in Auckland until about, 1887, when American brands, such as Vanity Fair, Lone Fisherman and Old Judge, were sold in Mr. lvil's new Queen street establishment, to which he had removed from Wyndham street. The new fashion in smoking did not take readily and was almost entirely confined to the smart set, whose members gloried in the limelight. There are five sons and six daughters surviving out of a family of 14. Thev are: Mesdames S. P. Howard, H. C. Williams, R. J. Carder, E. Davis, and G. Rainey, of Auckland, and Mrs. A. E. Macindoe, of Napier, and Messrs. W. G. Ivil, A. E. Ivil, E. Ivil, T. Ivil and L. S. Ivil, of Auckland.
