| Marriage | 9 May 1883 | Queensland, AustraliaG | |
| Death | 14 June 1934 | Following article taken from the Rockhampton paper of 16 June 1934: "Oldest Resident Of Rockhampton Mrs. MARY ANN BRAY There passed away at her residence in Fitzroy street, off Denison lane, on Thursday night, Mrs. Mary Ann Bray at the age of 75. The end came very peacefully. , Mrs. Bray was the daughter of the late Mr. William and Mrs. Margaret Willmott, both of whom died in 1884 within a few days of each other. Mr. Willmott was a native of England. His wife came from Ireland. Both migrated to Rockhampton and were among its first residents. On January 20, 1859, Mrs. Bray was born, in a tent on the bank of the Fitzroy River, near the site on which the Criterion Hotel now stands and in close proximity to the approach to the Fitzroy Bridge on the south side. Reluctance to have her name in print was the reason why she did not for years challenge the claim of a one-time cab driver as the first child to be born in Rockhampton. This distinction Mrs. Bray claimed, and a family Bible is the most authoritative source from which she substantiated her claim. Her earlier years were spent at North Rockhampton, where she attended a private school, the Willmott family residing in a house on the site of the North Rockhampton sawmill and in the vicinity of where the ferry boat landed passengers and the steam punt delivered stock groceries, etc. Except for an absence of a couple of months Springsure and an occasional holiday, Mrs. Bray resided continuously in Rockhampton since the date of her birth. Just 21 years ago Mrs. Bray was one of many old identities of the city and district who assembled in the Oddfellows' Hall, Denham street. The idea of celebrating the half-century of their residence in Rockhampton, or perhaps to be more accurate from 45 years upwards, was enthusiastically taken up and all were delighted at the happy consummation of the efforts taken. It was an imposing spectacle and a fine spirit of comradeship prevailed. Mrs. Bray was one of those who added her felicitations as to the object of the gathering. Mrs. J. T. (Margaret) Bartholomew, who has lived at Gogango for many years, is the only surviving member or the Willmott family, two brothers (twins) and two sisters having now passed away. Mrs. Bray, in addition to her sister, Mrs. Bartholomew, is survived by two sons, Charles and Bernard (Mackay), and two daughters Mrs. G. Reid (Mt Isa) and Mrs. H. T. Cowley (Rockhampton). The funeral took place yesterday afternoon. " http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page6896172 | Rockhampton, Queensland, AustraliaG |
