| Obituary | | Gunner Frank Hibell, of the New Zealand Field Artillery, who has been reported killed in France, was well known in the city and in Sumner where he resided for many years, and where he was actively associated with the Tennis Club and with the Volunteer Lifeboat Brigade. Gunner Hibell was about thirty-fare years of ago. He enlisted with the Fourth Reinforcements and was attached, with Major Beattie, to a battery that saw much active service on the Gallipoli Peninsula before it was stationed in France. As a soldier he was most favourably reported upon, and up to the time of his death, had enjoyed a run of perfect health and had escaped without a scratch. Before enlisting he was on the staff of Messrs William Wood and Co., of Christchurch. His parents are both dead His only brother, Private Gordon Hibell is a member of a reinforcement draft. | |

Private G. Hibell (killed), was a son of the late Mr. Frank Hibell, a well known surveyor in the early days. Prior to enlisting he lived in" Sumner for about ten years. He was very well known, having taken a very active interest in the Lifeboat Brigade, and held tho five-years' service medal. As a member of the Lifeboat Brigade he rendered excellent service, having assisted at rescues at which 20 lives were saved. In recognition of the services of G. and F. Hibell, who was killed in action last November, a prominent resident of Sumner presented to the Lifeboat Brigade a very powerful lamp for use in the lifeboat at night- time. Private G. Hibell also took an active interest in the Sumner Cricket Club. He was employed as an auctioneer by Messrs Brown, Little and Co.
