Girl Killed by Motor. - At Port road, Alberton, -at about '5.30 p.m. on- Sunday, a girl, 10 years of age, was knocked down by. a motor car near the intersection of' Wellington street, and subsequently died. The car was owned anddriven by Mr. James Smith, labourer, of College street, Portland, and he had with him his wife and Mrs. Blyth, ofClare street, Portland. The child was Olive Alice Dyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dyer, of Peel street, Yatala. Mr. James Pocock, of Jane street, Grey town, was driving a car along the Port road, and saw the child lying on the road. He stopped, and took her from Mr. Smith, who was just picking her up, and drove her to the Port Adelaide Casualty Hospital, where Dr. Cherry found she was dead. The body was- much bruised, and there were indications of a fractured skull. There were glass cuts on the child's arms, and the glass of the off-side head lamp of the car was broken. The driver of the car believed the child was struck by the off-side mudguard, and that the car then passed over her. Mrs. E. Norris,- of High street, Queenstown, standing at her front gate, saw two little girls cross High street and go to the Port road. A few moments later she heard a scream. Mr. Smith, who was greatly unnerved by the accident, said he was driving toward Adelaide at about 15 miles an hour, and saw two little girls standing in the road. When he was nearly opposite them one ran in front of the car. He applied his brake, and swerved to avoid a collision, but without success. He estimated that the car stopped within 20 ft. He got some one to ring up the Port. Adelaide police, while he remained until Constable Matttiske arrived. Meantime Constable Williams made enquiries from witnesses.
