| Death | 12 April 1916 | DEATH OF Mr. J. O'BRIEN Residents of Wangaratta and district were pained on hearing the sad news on Thursday Mr. Joseph O'Brien had died suddenly the previous night at his home in Rowan Street. Mr. O'Brien had not been in good health for some weeks and a month back was seized with at heart attack. He recovered, and during the past fortnight had been attending to his business as usual, driving or walking to his store in Templeton Street. On Wednesday night he retired to bed early and read the daily paper. At 10 o'clock he received the evening newspaper and was preparing to read it when he complained to Mrs O'Brien of tightness in the chest. Mrs O'Brien went to get him something to afford relief, and on returning to the room found her husband in a state of collapse. A doctor was telephoned for, but on his hurried arrival found that death had taken place, the cause being heart failure. Mr O'Brien was widely known and his circle of acquaintances will regret exceedingly his death. Born at Castlemaine in 1858, he was therefore in his 58th year. He was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs Joseph O'Brien, who died at Goulburn, N.S.W. With his parents Mr. O'Brien came to Wangaratta in 1861, and with the exception of four years spend at Gouburn, resided here ever since, helping in and witnessing the development and progress of the town and district. On leaving school Mr. O'Brien secured employment at Mr. Leishman's tannery, and there learnt the trade and became a practical tanner. Subsequently he left and with his brother, Mr. Wm. O'Brien, established the fellmongery on the banks of the Ovens river at the rear of the show grounds, where they founded a hive of industry, employing as many as 80 hands in the busy season, and on an average 40 hands all the year round. They operated on a big scale, and the concern brought prosperity to the town. Its progress, however, was shattered in the boom year, and after thirteen years of hard work Messrs O'Brien Bros. had to close down. Mr. Wm. O'Brien moved to Yarrawonga, but Mr. Joe O'Brien remained in the town and commenced business as wool and hide merchant, in which he was successful. The late Mr. O'Brien was upright, genial and god natured, and these sterling qualities won for him the esteem and respect of all who knew him. In earlier years he took an active interest in various public movements, and was one of the organisers of the tugs-of-war held and which aroused so much interest throughout the North-East. He acted as captain to various teams, and took an exceedingly keen interest in this amusement. He gave generously to all deserving causes, and also helped in other ways any in need of assistance. He took a warm interest in the Loyal Junction Lodge of Odd-fellows, and attained to the office of Past Grand, and was also a member of the St. John's Masonic Lodge. He leaves a wife and family of six sons and four daughters, for whom deepest sympathy is expressed in their bereavement. The members of the family are Mr. Frank O'Brien, railway guard, Goulburn; Ptes. Joseph, Bert and John O'Brien, Egypt; Masters Locky and Len, O'Brien, Wangaratta,; Mrs. J. Kleiner, Kew; Mrs. Symons, New Zealand; Mrs H Jenkens, Ballarat; Miss Dorothy O'Brien Wangaratta. There are eight grand-children. Brothers of deceased are Messrs John O'Brien, Goulburn, and Wm. O'Brien, Yarrawonga; and sisters, Mesdames Byers and de Peizza, of Mudgegonga, and Mrs M'Namara, Goulburn. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, when a large number of relatives and friends followed the remains to the Wangaratta Cemetery. The coffin and pall bearers' (brethren of the Loyal Junction Lodge of Odd-fellows) were: Coffin bearers, Bros. W. Morley, junr., L. Gunther, A. H. Smith and E. Bradford; pall bearers, Bros. W. Smith, senr., G. Moore, J. Jasper, W. H. Edwards, R. McCormick, W. Morley, senr. The burial service of the Church of England was read by Rev.. Canon Pitt, that, of the Oddfellows Lodge by Bro. W. H. Edwards, and that of the Mason ic Lodge by the Lodge Chaplain, Rev F. Chisholm, Members of the two lodges attended the funeral. The funeral arrangements were carried out by "Irvings" Mr. G., V. | Wangaratta, Victoria, AustraliaG1 |
