Burial	19 August 1880	A sad case of drowning took place in East Maryborough yesterday afternoon, about one o'clock. A little boy, two years of age, son of Mr James Bartholomew, it appears left his mother, who was busily engaged in household duties, and she, supposing that the little one was merely going to the dooor, took but little notice. About ten minutes after, she called him, but receiving no reply, went out in search, under the impression that he had gone towards the sawmills. At the rear of the mills is a boarded well, about five or six feet dep, for the purpose of storing water, and from which the boilers of the mill are supplied. Our informant tells us it is almost incredible that a child of such tender years could approach this well, he himself finding great difficulty in getting to it. However, the unfortunate little boy must have found his way there, climbed over the boarding, and fallen in, as the body was discovered in the water about 20 minutes afterwards, and all efforts by Dr Power to restore animation proved no avail.
