| Immigration | About 1882 | Thomas came to Australia in 1882 with his mother and brother. His father had earlier gone to the USA before coming to Australia and sending for his family. At first they lived at Emmaville, NSW, where Thoams, at the age of 10, was earning 4/2 per day in the mines. The family then moved to Sunny Corner, and both he and his father were involved in building the big brick chimney there. After the Sunny Corner mines closed he moved to Braidwood and then to Captain's Flat before coming to Orange. After he married Lavinia, they lived at Greengate, Orange. Thomas worked in the mines at Lucknow, and also drove a horse-drawn coach to and from Lucknow and Orange for the miners. Later he had a converted lorry which was known as "Lawry's Lorry". Their first home in Lucknow was on part of the "Aladdin" mine land, which he farmed as well as share-farming on land belonging to Mr Carroll of "Summer Hill". He grew oats, potatoes, hay etc. The house had previously belonged to Lavinia's mother and was moved to the "Aladdin" for them. The house was built of weatherboards inside and out, with a galvanised iron roof. The kitchen was detached and was made of wattle and daub with a low chimney. There was an open fire place and camp oven for cooking. The family bathed in a washtub in from of the fire on Saturday nights.
In 1912, he purchased Lot 7 of the agricultural land being put up for sale by the D'Arcy Estate Syndicate, after the company went into liquidation and ceased mining. This land included the property on which he lived as well as the old "Jackass", "Aladdin's Lamp" and "Amana" mines. He turned the property into a successful orchard, growing apples, pears, plums, cherries and grapes. Between the trees, when they were young, he also grew potatoes, peas and turnips.
Thomas was a man who enjoyed life and worked hard. His home was famed for its hospitality, as he like people and loved to talk and sing. He loved plants and tended his garden around the house with great care. He also lived horses, and preferred them to the motorised form of transport. Lavinia was a much quieter person, but also a hard worker, keeping on the go from 5 am until 9 at night, doing the milking and getting it ready to be distributed to the neighbours (by the girls on their way to school), making butter, and cooking for her large family. ('Lucknow - a Veritable Goldmine' by Kerrin Cook, 1995)
Thomas stoked the furnace at Sunny Corner Mine before 1913. Was a farmer, grazier and orchardist Aladdin 1913. From Lucknow he drove the coach to and from Orange to convey miners families. (Margaret MacNevin) | |
