| Burial | After 31 October 1917 | A serious and what proved to be a fatal accident occurred on Wednesday on Devoncourt Station run to a man named Mr. George Troy, who held the position of manager of the Trekelano Pastoral Company for Messrs. McMaster Bros. It appears that Mr. Troy was reported missing on Wednesday, and a search was at once made. A large party scoured the country for two daysand on Saturday came across the body of the unfortunate man. It is believed that deceased was galloping after a beast when the horse he was riding put his foot into a broken gully and fell. From appearances it would appear that death must have been almost instantaneous, he being dead, two days when found. Constable Gelner who was one of tho search party, buried the body at the spot where it was discovered. The late George Troy was a stranger in the district, but It is believed that he was a widower and had a son attending school at either Charters Towers or Townsville. Deceased was about 48 years of age. | 1 |
| Inquest | 26 November 1917 | Inquiry into the Circumstances Concerning the Death of George Richard Troy, whom was found dead at Devoncourt Holding and employed by McMaster Br (Brisbane or Brothers) held at Duchess 26th day November 1917.
Richard Rice "Copper Miner' being duly sworn, states that on Wednesday 31st October I met the deceased, George Richard Troy at Ibis Bore at about 8am on that date and he told me he was going up the creek to muster cattle. At about 11am on same date, myself and Mr Moss were at the Ibis Bore and Troy had not returned. We consulted and considered that something had gone wrong, or he had met with an accident, did in the evening of the same date we considered that something serious had happened, and we decided to report the matter to the Police at Duchess. (Mr Moss went to Duchess and reported the matter).
I with others continued a search of the surrounding district, and on Saturday 3rd November almost 11am I found the body of the deceased, George Richard Troy, almost one mile south from Ibis bore, he was lying on his back, his right arm across his check, his legs extended, and no appearance of struggle, made some investigations of the surroundings, and found that the horse the deceased was riding had made a fault and must have turned right over, crushing the deceased, and from my opinion he met his death by purely accidental circumstances and there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the case.
I Alfred Moss, copper miner, at present residing at The Monument about seven miles from Ibis Bore remember the evening of the 31st Octover, and from something I heard. I met Richard Rice at almost 11am at Ibis Bore and from all I could gather from him Troy had fone up the creek and had not returned, we did not consider anything was wrong, but later in time same afternoon it was xxxx something was wrong, and became anzious and decided to make a search, also to report the matter to the Police at Duchess Police, I came to the residence of Mr Threadborough who came to Duchess. I returned and made search and on Saturday 3 No I was shown by a member of the search party the dead body of the deceased George Richard Troy, which I identified which was about one mile South of Ibis Bore. The Body was lying on its back with right hand across the chest, feet extended from the surrounding that the horse had tripped in a revine or gully and must have turned over, crushing the deceased, and i consider his death was purely accidental. | Duchess, Queensland, AustraliaG |
